Pad Thai
This is Thai food 101. Pad Thai is the most popular Thai dish around the globe. It comprises of thick noodles which are stir-fried in a wok with onion, egg and bean sprouts. Many people add shrimp, chicken, beef or tofu with their Pad Thai so be sure to add it if required! For an extra kick, Pad Thai is served with the option of chilli powder or for those wanting a milder meal you can add sugar, lemon juice and ground peanuts to your liking. Simple but yummy!
Gaeng Keow Wan Kai- Green Chicken Curry
The Green Chicken Curry is a blend of subtle tastes that create a creamy curry that is irresistible. The chicken is cut up into small pieces which are mixed in with basil, coriander, bamboo shoots, eggplants and tiny corn cobs to give a curry that will melt in your mouth. This again is a tourist favourite but remember to tell them how hot you want it. Nit noy (A little in Thai) may just go a long way!
Tom Yum Goong- Spicy Shrimp Soup
Time to step out of your comfort zone. This is what many locals eat on a regular basis. Tom Yum is a delicate balance of spicy and sour which packs a punch but will have you wanting more and more. Lemongrass, ginger, galangal, chillies, coriander and shrimp are served together in a soup dish that will give you a classic Thai taste that you would have never tried anywhere else.
Som Tum- Green Papaya Salad
Raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, string beans, peanuts and a mixture of other spices make up the Green papaya salad. What’s not to love? This is available at all Thai restaurants and is a perfect way to start off a meal or to have as a main course. A quick note for all you vegetarians out there, this salad is sometimes served with a fish sauce so just ask the server not to include it. It is just as tasty without!
Khao Pad- Fried Rice
Khao Pad looks a little similar to Chinese egg fried rice but the Thais do theirs a little differently which is even tastier. Vegetables such as peas, corn and other spices are mixed in with a choice of shrimp, chicken or crab. It’s thrown into a wok and is generally served with cucumber slices and chilli sauce on the side. Simple but an effective way to have a quick lunch amongst all the shops.
Mango and sticky rice
Mango and sticky rice?! Sounds weird right? But this is found everywhere in Thailand. The mango is cut up into small pieces and served alongside rice which has been made with coconut milk and brown sugar giving it a ‘sticky’ texture. You will find many street vendors across Thailand selling this as it is a portable Thai snack that you can take on the go. Many tourists try this for the first time in Thailand and enjoy it so make sure you don’t miss out.
